Físico estadounidense. Entró a la Universidad de Yale a los 15 años y obtuvo su Ph.D. del Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts en 1951. Desde 1955 enseñó en el Instituto Tecnológico de California, obteniendo en 1967 la cátedra Millikan de física teórica. En 1953 introdujo el concepto de "extrañeza, una propiedad cuántica que explicaba la forma de desintegración de ciertos mesones. En 1961, junto con Yuval Ne'eman (n. 1925) propuso un esquema (el "Camino óctuple; en inglés, Eightfold Way) que agrupó los mesones y bariones en multipletes de 1, 8, 10 ó 27 miembros sobre la base de diversas propiedades. Especuló que era posible explicar ciertas propiedades de partículas conocidas en términos de partículas aún más fundamentales, o bloques constitutivos, a los cuales más tarde llamó quarks. Se le otorgó el Premio Nobel de Física en 1969.
